87’ 325i I bought off an old guy who had it for 12 years. Almost at 200,000 miles. Still young for an E30 ;) Anyway, keep up the sweet blog!
Nice find! Love tech 1s and sedans are ultimate sleepers!
I’ve no experience with them but from what I’ve seen and read, the most common complaint is that the rears don’t go low enough and that the spring rates are weird? 8k / 8k, when usually e30 setups have stiffer rear springs to work with the rear trailing arm design.
What I would recommend is to find some e30 people and ask for a ride along. So you can determine which setup you like the best.
Black & Red
Quick and dirty chop. I was convincing my dad to really ‘lower’ the e24.
Okay cool! Good thing you mentioned those. If you plan on really dumping it, like dumped like an NA, avoid the 318is by all means.
It’s the same as what I have and it sucks to lower it. I smashed pans at stock height before. The lower pan design is past the front subframe. Idk why. Maybe cooling purposes? But as a real daily driver it’s awesome with fuel consumption and peppy.
Other than that, everything’s free game. The difference between an E, ES, and an IS is mostly trim. That’s with he exception of the IS models having OEM sway bars, and ‘stiffer’ stock springs and a slightly different tune since they’re supposed to be ‘sports’ versions.
Looks wise, there’s the US metal bumpers (aka diving boards) and the facelift (aka plastic bumpers). Most people new to E30s and some not so new don’t realize that the older E30s had higher reach arches unlike newer models that have the rear arches being lower. So.. When lowered the newer ones kinda look reverse raked when in actuality it’s equal and you would have to actually take it to look normal. Lol
If you’re not in the US, I hate you. Lol
I’m gonna be a dick about this and tell you that if you have to ask, you might as well get a NotAnE30 and spare yourself from headaches.
But in all seriousness, as with any car, you wanna ask the usual stuff.
Original engine? No?
Who rebuilt it? When?
Again, receipts? Records of rebuild?
When did the odometer stop?
(Kind of e30/e28/e21/older bmw related since most stop due to plastic bits inside falling apart)
Ask the seller why they’re selling it.
They might tell you the truth or be caught off guard and tell you the real deal.
Are they the first owner? Second? Third?
Ask if the car’s been repainted.
Been in an accident?
Find out if the seller is on a forum.
If so, find out if this person has a solid history/ build thread.
Stalk them if you must.
When visiting the car, low key find out where it’s usually parked/garaged.
Look for stains on said parking spot.
If it’s an outdoor parking spot, use that as a bargaining chip since the paint may be fucked already because of being parked outdoors.
If there’s an aftermarket radio, chances are, the wiring’s fucked.
Check the rubber hoses in the engine bay. Cracks? Yes? Bargain.
If there’s an aftermarket intake, the seller may or may not be a ricer. Which then leads us to more fucked wiring and other hack job shenanigans.
Ask how often the coolant was replaced/topped up. Same with oil changes.
Take a look at the underside of the oil cap when you take it off. Check if there’s any cum looking stuff on it. If there is, the owner is a fucking weirdo or it’s a blown head gasket.
AC? Heat? Even if you live in an area where there’s hot climate, this may help you diagnose if the car’s been messed with. The heater hoses that connect the engine to the heater stuff on stock 4 cyl and 6 cyl e30s are a bit difficult to get a hold of. It’s at the rear most of the engine, connecting it to the firewall. Most of the time, if the owner’s lazy, this just gets bypassed for different reasons.
Try to be courteous while asking these questions since you don’t really want to be a prick about asking these things when buying any car since It helps to be cool with the seller.
You should go look for an e30 Bentley or chilton manual since these have troubleshooting stuff in it which will help when buying an e30.
I can’t post a link for downloading PDFs of these manuals due to tumblr’s terms of service and whatevs but I’m pretty sure google will tell show you anyway. Lol
Good luck with the hunt. I’m not sure if I’m any help since I’m half asleep right now.
If you got the resources, go for it dude.
I have nothing productive to post about my own.. so yeah.. submit YOUR e30. Don’t care if it’s show car status or street heap like mine, or something in between! Submissions are open again!
